What's Up? - Ohio Skylights October 2025

Zodiacal Light and Venus

Happy October! I hope everyone’s been having a good start to the autumn semester. We’ll be starting the month off with sunrise at 7:28am and sunset at 7:13pm. We will continue to lose daylight as we near the wintertime, ending the month with sunrise at 8:00am and sunset at 6:30pm.

Super Moon

On Monday, October 6th, we will be able to see the Harvest Moon. It’s one of the three supermoons (a supermoon is when the moon is closest to the Earth, so it appears the largest) which are visible in 2025. We’ll end the month with a new moon on the 21st.

Meteor Shower

As for meteor showers, the Orionids meteor shower will peak at the end of the month (October 22-23), but will be visible from October 2 to November 12, 2025.

Planets and Zodiacal Light

Mercury will be reaching its greatest eastern elongation this month on October 29th. This means it will be easiest to view and will be visible shortly after sunset in the western sky. During the month of October, Saturn, Mars, and Mercury will be visible in the evening sky. In the early morning sky, Jupiter and Venus will be visible. Also, look for the zodiacal light, pictured below. The zodiacal light is when light from the Sun reflects off dust particles in the inner solar system, causing a cone-like light to shine.
